The Third Book
Making the jump from a feudal subsistence agriculture to a modern economy is huge, and the foundational work that made this happen in Western Civilization is Adam Smith's “Wealth of Nations”. Note that I am currently reading this one, so I only know it by reputation.

adam smith was brilliant for 1000 years ago. HOWEVER it is based on fallacious (and unstated) assumptions that renders it dangerous as well as erroneous in our current times. all modern economists fall into the same trap as well as others based on fallacious assumptions mostly unstated.
