Quote the Bible, Go to Jail

Interesting ruling by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Of course the precedent gets set when someone makes a statement that is over the top, but once the precedent is set...

I love this country, but I don't love everything about this country.

That is terrifying - and reminiscent of the philosophy behind books we studied in my Utopian Fiction course in university.

Just after I read this, I was checking some of my other daily feeds and there was a comment about George Santayana, who I don't know much about, so I looked him up.

An interesting note in connection with today's topic - one writer, commenting on the relationship between Bertrand Russell and Santayana, noted that although Santayana disagreed with Russell fundamentally in both politics and philosophy, he supported Russell's work financially out of "regard for Russell's genius". (This did not mean that he hesitated to rebutt Russell's work in the philosophical arena!).

Just thought that was a great example of an attitude that truly respects and encourages freedom of speech, regardless of personal viewpoint.
